Traditional Cold Process Soapmaking
At Red Barn Tradition, we craft our soaps using the traditional cold process method—a time-tested technique that has been used for generations.
Unlike many commercial cleansing bars, cold process soap is made in small batches and allowed to cure naturally, creating a long-lasting bar with a rich, creamy lather.
Step 1: Selecting Quality Ingredients
Every batch begins with carefully selected ingredients.
Our recipes feature:
• Grass-Fed Tallow
• Distilled Water
• Sodium Hydroxide (Lye)
• Natural Additives (depending on recipe)
• Essential Oils (selected varieties)
We focus on simple ingredients that have stood the test of time.
Step 2: Preparing the Soap Base
The tallow and oils are carefully measured and combined with a lye solution.
This begins a process called saponification—the chemical reaction that transforms fats and oils into real soap.
Step 3: Hand Mixing
Each batch is mixed by hand and monitored closely to ensure consistency and quality.
At this stage we may add:
• Oatmeal
• Goat Milk
• Honey
• Pine Tar
• Coffee
• Activated Charcoal
• Essential Oils
depending on the recipe.
Step 4: Pouring and Molding
The soap is poured into molds and insulated to complete the saponification process.
The soap remains in the mold for approximately 24–48 hours before being removed and cut into bars.
Step 5: Cutting Each Bar
Every loaf is hand-cut into individual bars.
Because our soaps are handcrafted, slight variations in color, pattern, and weight are normal and part of what makes each bar unique.
Step 6: The Curing Process
After cutting, the soap is placed on curing racks for 4–6 weeks.
This curing period allows excess water to evaporate and creates a harder, longer-lasting bar with a richer lather.
We never rush this step.
Step 7: Packaging
Once fully cured, each bar is inspected, wrapped, labeled, and prepared for shipment.
Our goal is to deliver a traditional soap that reflects the quality and craftsmanship of generations past.
